Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two round cake pans with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Incorporate buttermilk, oil, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar into the wet mixture.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until just combined.
  7. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow cakes to cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. In a large mixing bowl, beat together softened butter and cream cheese until smooth.
  10. Gradually add powdered sugar while mixing on low speed.
  11. Add vanilla extract, salt, and heavy whipping cream; beat until fluffy.
  12. Once cakes are cooled, place one layer on the greaseproof board. Spread an even layer of frosting on top.
  13. Place second layer on top; frost the entire cake with remaining frosting.
  14. Use gel food coloring for decoration; pipe features like eyes or stitches using different piping tips for an eerie effect!
