  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups fresh blackberries
  • 2 tbsp white granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Chocolate skulls for decoration
  • Fresh blackberries for decoration
  • Dried rose petals for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix sugar, flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, hot coffee, canola oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. Gradually combine with the dry ingredients until just mixed.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool.
  5. For the blackberry compote, combine blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, zest, cinnamon stick, water, and cornstarch in a saucepan over medium heat until thickened.
  6. For frosting, beat softened cream cheese and butter together; gradually add powdered sugar and black cocoa powder until smooth.
  7. Assemble by layering cake with blackberry compote in between and frost the top and sides with the buttercream.
  8. Decorate with chocolate skulls and fresh blackberries.
